Many golfers are hitting their wedge shots much higher than need be. This often causes the precision of the shot to falter, which can lead to missed holes on the golf course. Such a practice can be especially dangerous when swinging your wedges into a strong winded day.
Hitting lower wedge shots around the green and rough on the course allows a golfer to practice their technique even in a high wind scenario. Often golfers will find that striking their wedges lower requires a complete renovation on how they’re setting up their entire golf swing.
In an effort to strike your wedges lower, the golfer must adapt a stance that lowers their swing path while still maintaining the needed amount of backspin on the golf ball. This will allow the ball to stop in the green as desired by most players. Most golfers will shoot to land the ball in an area of the putting green that favors the wind behind the golfer, which will be much easier to putt against.
Adding more backspin to the shot will require that a high loft wedge, typically lob or sand, be used to accomplish this end goal.
When striking your wedge with a golf club of a high loft, many players place the ball further backward than they would in a normal golf swing in order to play the ball somewhat in line with their back foot, almost parallel.
Golfers must angle their wedge in the direction of their target and maintain this positioning through their impact with the golf ball.
This will add the short finish that our golf swing needs in order to achieve our intended goals.
The way that we rotate our bodies during the golf swing can also have a huge influence over the success or failure of our wedge shot. Most of our body will be needed to be pushed forward, with very little moving backward.
Focusing on rotating into our target with our clubshaft maintained in a forward leaning fashion, we can count on striking our wedges solid and strong upon impact with the golf ball.
