As expected, the PGA Tour is back to its birdie fest ways this week at the 3M Open. Half the field has yet to tee off and there are already nearly 40 players under par, including Kyle Stanley, who went out in six-under 30 on TPC Twin Cities’ back nine.
But, as four-time PGA Tour winner Brian Gay’s ridiculous opening nine card proves, just because conditions are far easier in Minnesota than they were at Muirfield Village doesn’t mean big numbers aren’t still out there. Gay made back-to-back double bogeys at the 13th and 14th holes (his fourth and fifth), the first not featuring a penalty stroke and the second featuring one water ball off the tee.
The 48-year-old bounced back in a big way though, making four consecutive birdies to close out an even-par 36. That’s right, Gay went out in even par despite making just one par, which came at his opening hole, the par-4 10th. Take a gander at this beauty:
They say there are no pictures on the scorecard, but there are a ton of squares and circles on that one. Impressive fight by Gay, who settled down on the back nine by making five straight pars. Boooring.
