On Sunday afternoon at Detroit Golf Club, Matthew Wolff has a chance to change the course of a relatively unremarkable sophomore season on the PGA Tour and return his rise in pro golf to meteoric status.
The 21-year-old carries a three-stroke lead into the final round of the Rocket Mortgage Classic, after rounds of 69-64-64. In 13 starts thus far in the 2019-’20 season, Wolff’s best finish is a T-11 in January’s Sentry Tournament of Champions. In fact, since his breakthrough victory at the 3M Open last July, a win that came in just his third career PGA Tour start as a professional, Wolff hasn’t had a top-10 performance. That’s not so much to suggest there were false hope placed on the former NCAA champion at Oklahoma State with the funky swing, but rather that settling into life on the PGA Tour is actually pretty hard.
If Wolff stays aggressive on Sunday and performs as he has thus far in Detroit—his 25 birdies and eagles through 54 holes is the most of any player in any tournament this season—he chances of becoming the youngest two-time tour winner since Tiger Woods (age 20) are high would be accomplished in just his 22nd start. Any stumble, however, leaves room for Bryson DeChambeau, who has posted six straight top-10 finishes but no wins. There’s also career journeyman Ryan Armour not far behind, he too looking for career win No. 2 albeit in his 179th tour start.
