As the LPGA Tour commences competition after a long pause due to the global spreading of COVID-19, one player came out of mandatory testing with a positive result. Gaby Lopez, who won the Diamond Resorts Tournament of Champions in January, has withdrawn from the Drive On Championship at Inverness in Toledo, Ohio, and will begin her 10-day self-isolation.
“I was very excited to get back to playing on Tour after this long break and while I’m disappointed that I’ll have to wait a little longer, I am glad that I was able to get tested and to make sure I do not put anyone else at risk,” Lopez, 26, said in a statement provided by the tour. “I am self-isolating and will be following all the CDC and LPGA guidelines to get back to competing on Tour in a safe manner. I’m feeling good and looking forward to when I can return to playing on Tour.”
Lopez wrote on Twitter that she is “feeling good and have only very mild symptoms.”
Per guidelines, Lopez will be tested again on her 10th day of isolation and receive a medical evaluation. If that COVID-19 test comes back negative, she will be allowed to return to competition.
